UPDATE: As of November 5, 2019, Coop’s is on hiatus and taking a break from business. Well, we’re on our search for a new mechanic, again…

August 24, 2019 – We live on a mountain in Henderson County, North Carolina. We have about 800 feet in elevation and 2 miles of switchbacks and gravel to get up daily. A 2013 GMC Yukon XL gets it done. (I hope it’s the last car we buy, until the self-driving models are available.) A few years ago, the emergency brake quit working, it no longer stopped, or even slowed down, the car… which is a problem, given the terrain we navigate. My fear was, in case of brake outage, the only way to stop the car would be to destroy the transmission by putting the damn thing in park.
Before finding Andrew at Coop’s Mobile Garage, we’d taken our car to three different mechanics around Henderson County over a two year period. One garage in Fletcher, and two different mechanics in Edneyville. It would seem to be a simple request: Get our emergency brake working. We told each the same thing: our emergency brake didn’t work, please fix it. Each mechanic replaced the already new emergency brake pads with new ones. One of them actually replaced the pads twice!! LOL All of them said they did everything they could, adjusted it, blah blah blah… but it still didn’t stop the car. It seemed local mechanics were great at replacing parts, but not so much at actually fixing them. I’d just about given up hope… we just had to live with a broken emergency brake and hope we never needed it.
Until I ran across Andrew with Coop’s Mobile Garage. I was skeptical, most of the mobile mechanics in Asheville area that I’d contact before seemed a little shady. One of the first things I ask for is proof of liability insurance. (As an insurance agent, I’ve seen more than a few claims on personal auto policies from damage caused by uninsured mechanics!) Nobody had it – even though the cost is typically well under $500/year. But Andrew at Coop’s Mobile Garage was insured, and he emailed over a Certificate of Insurance. Everyone should request this before allowing any type of contractor onto their property. But it gets better…
Andrew at Coop’s Mobile Garage in Hendersonville, NC fixed it!!! They’re the top mechanic in Hendersonville, NC.
For the first time in over two years, our emergency brake worked. It wasn’t broken anymore! I could apply the emergency brake on a steep hill, put car in neutral, at it kept the car stopped. Andrew explained this particular model of car had an unusual emergency brake mechanism – even for General Motors. I think he mentioned it worked like ‘old Nissan’ emergency brakes, and that even some GM mechanics weren’t familiar with how it worked. (Already found that out!) The mechanism other mechanics claimed to ‘adjust’ was adjusted… all the way in the WRONG DIRECTION. Andrew mentioned the more the brake was used, the better it would grip. And it did. Steep hill, neutral, emergency brake, stopped!
But that wasn’t all. Andrew also loosened up and lubricated some sticky brake calipers, checked a sticky accelerator, and did an oil change, too – on our other car. He took time to explain exactly what he’d done. His rates were reasonable too, probably less than all those other mechanics charged. Coop’s Mobile Garage charges by actual time, rather than ‘shop time’ as most other places.
Why bother dragging your car to some mechanic shop where you have to get a ride home, or wait for hours? If you’re in Western North Carolina, have an experienced, qualified, insured mobile mechanic come at your convenience. He’ll repair your cars while you wait in the comfort of your own home. He takes credit cards, too.
If you call Andrew, let him know where you found him…
