Discover Historic Lodge nestled in North Carolina Mountains near Cherokee Casino, Bryson City, Asheville

We recently ran across and toured an astounding opportunity on a 16k+ square foot 14 bedroom historic mountain lodge for sale. Located near many Western North Carolina nature attractions and Cherokee Casino, the current owner calls it the Spirit of the Mountain Lodge and offers overnight AirBNB stays.  It’s been through several iterations of renovation and utilization since first built.  Previous owners called it the Tuckasiegee River Mountain Lodge, but it was originally built in 1940 by Samuel Henry Kress as a vacation home and company training center.  Check out a video of this North Carolina Mountain Lodge for sale in it’s current condition.

Known for building stores with notable architecture, the builder of this mountain lodge was founder of S. H. Kress & Co., a five and dime store similar to Woolworth’s or K-Mart. Contrary to popular belief in the area – where some tell very long tales of Kress escaping from Nazi Germany and using the area as a family homestead – my research indicates he was a homegrown deeply protestant thoroughbred American from Cherryville, Pennylvania, near Allentown.  Not an escapee from Hitlers regime.  In fact, it’s said he commissioned Italian masons to construct the fancy stone work seen throughout the lodge. His legacy lives on at the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

Spirit of the Mountain WindowIt’s now appropriately and stylishly appointed for overnight accommodations and offered as a pet friendly AirBNB rental.  (In fact, might do yourself a favor and schedule a few nights for your next mountain getaway!)  Bedrooms in the west wing are fully furnished complete with mini-fridge,private bathrooms, and era-appropriate style.  We didn’t stay overnight, but it seems ideal for a family reunion, maybe up to 30 or more people.  Cozy but with common areas sufficient to accommodate such crowds.  Walking through the building seemed like we traveled through time back to when Biltmore Estate-esque vibes were commonplace.  It was remarkably warm, cozy, rustic.  The one-lane road up to the house is fully paved; any car can make it, you don’t need four wheel drive.  When you get there, views abound are heavenly.  Best of all, the booming mountain town of Asheville is only an hour to the east, and Atlanta, Charlotte and Knoxville aren’t far either.

All of the major mechanical systems in the building seem to have been recently upgraded, roof, electrical, wood-fired heating system.  (Wood fire heat is awesome… we’ve been doing it at home for going on our 3rd winter.)  It comes with all the components, furnishings and supplies to start a niche hotel, lodge, or a restaurant.  It has a commercial kitchen (and 3 other kitchens), an owners suite, and servants quarters, too.  Most floors appear refinished, walls painted nicely. All the plumbing fixtures we tried worked well, fast hot water and great water pressure. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an old building and certainly needs a little T.L.C., but it seems priced appropriately.

If you’re not ready to buy, you can still experience this place yourself, right now… book an overnight AirBNB stay. Or, this place would be amazing for the right buyer… contact the broker.  I’m not affiliated with the property, the seller, the broker, or anything like that… we just really liked the owner, and the place.  It will suit the right buyer well.
